The Way of Jesus in the World of Today

Dear Grady,

The Academy community has been grateful for a few summer months to rejoice in the lives of the recently graduated Fellows and to pray in anticipation of our incoming class. We've also been grateful for some rest.

Regarding rest, I was recently struck by a passage in Tim Keller's newest book King's Cross, which is on the Fellows' reading list for the summer. In the chapter entitled "The Rest", Keller provides us with some hope for finding deep rest and with it, the all too elusive satisfication which our Sabbaths or vacations often lack. He writes that the Sabbath is a call to rest from more than our physical work "because there's a work underneath our work that we really need to rest from. It's the work of self-justification." May we all find deep rest from that tireless task this summer as we rest in the work of Christ.

I want to draw your attention to a special event we are hosting here at Osprey Point with Os Guinness on September 15. It is certainly an important moment in the United States to step back and consider how to restore civility to our public square. We hope you can join us to hear Os reflect on his latest book The Case for Civility and how as Christians we can respond to the pressing issues facing our country.

We look forward to welcoming our new class of Fellows to Osprey Point on August 27 and introducing them to you soon.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

Class of 2011 Fellowship Projects

Throughout the Academy year Fellows develop a personal research project designed to accomplish two primary goals: 1) develop a biblical foundation for understanding and engaging an issue that is critical to their life and work, and 2) develop their own voice in speaking credibly and persuasively back into their chosen field. Each Fellow conducts extensive research and composes an extended essay or discipline-appropriate project such as an art portfolio, music album, or business plan. At the end of the year the Fellows present their work along with a prayerful plan on how they intend to act on it in the next stage of their lives.

Alumni Featured in "The Language of Science and Faith"

In the introduction to his most recent publication, The Language of Science and Faith: Straight Answers to Genuine QuestionsDr. Francis Collins highlights the role three Academy Alumni played in developing material for the book. Beginning in the fall of 2007, Dr. Collins assembled a research team of Alumni including David Scudder (Academy Class of '08, Stanford-Biology), Syman Stevens ('07, Oxford-Philosophy of Physics), and Monica Slinkard ('07, Yale-Nursing, Public Health). David, Syman, and Monica helped Dr. Collins review questions he had received in response to the publication of The Language of God . Together they summarized the range of questions and, along with experienced theologians such as Alister McGrath, researched and drafted initial answers. In addition to the eventual publication of this book, their work formed the backbone for launching The BioLogos Forum, which Syman subsequently directed for two years.

Gib Singleton's "Father and Son" on Display

World renowned sculptor Gib Singleton has captured some of the most moving biblical images in striking bronzes. Thanks to the generosity of Doug Forrester, Singleton's sculpture "Father and Son" is now on display in the Academy library. For Forrester this piece vividly captures the nature of God as Trinity - the loving Father carrying his broken son Jesus with the wind of the Spirit rushing around them. The comprehensive nature, beauty, and mystery of the Trinity is a theological truth that Forrester feels has mostly been lost in modern Chrisitanity. Compelled to restore a robust view of the Trinity among young Christian leaders, Forrester was inspired to provide funding to help launch Trinity Forum Academy. Forrester continues to offer an annual lecture on the nature of the Trinity and the role a more in-depth understanding plays in shaping our relationship with God, with one another, and with our culture.   See the scuplture in detail

Restoring Civility in the Public Square: An Evening with Os Guinness

In a nation and world torn apart by fierce partisanship, no question is more urgent than how we live with our deepest religious and ideological differences. Join us at Osprey Point on September 15 at 6:45pm for a talk on restoring civility in the American public square by social critic, author, and co-founder of Trinity Forum Academy, Dr. Os Guinness. Following the talk will be a reception and time of fellowship with Os and the Fellows of the Trinity Forum Academy. RSVP to Sharon Covington at academy@ttf.org.
